Man Illegally Imports 202,000 Pounds of Tuna, Pays $17,500 Fine

The Yellowfin tuna was brought into the Bay Area from the Philippines.

A Daly City fish importing business owner has been fined $17,500 for illegally importing more than 202,000 pounds of tuna from the Philippines, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Caesar Ruivivar, owner of Blue H2O Seafood, was found to have operated without a commercial fish importing license between Jan. 1, 2011, to Nov. 30, 2011, and Jan. 1, 2012, to Jan. 25, 2012, according to the district attorney's office. Investigators from the California Department of Fish and Game, which is responsible for administering fish importer licenses, alleged that Ruivivar imported 1,688 Yellowfin tuna caught in the Philippines while operating without a proper license. The fish weighed about 202,500 pounds and was sold to …

State Superintendent Urges Parents to Vaccinate Students

Parents of students entering seventh grade must vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson this week is urging parents of students entering the seventh grade to vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law. “I call on all parents to act as soon as possible and ensure their children receive this important vaccination,” Torlakson said in a statement. “Taking a few minutes now will help protect your child’s health, and help them get off to a smooth start in the next school year,” he said. According to Dr. Ron Chapman, Director of the California Department of Public Health, in 2010, 9,000 Californians were diagnosed with pertussis and 10 infants died from the disease. “Due to the collective statewide vaccination efforts this …

Man Now Competent for Trial in David Lewis' Murder

The suspect in the murder of East Palo Alto community activist David Lewis has been found competent to stand trial after previously placing in a state mental hospital.

The man accused of murdering East Palo Alto community activist David Lewis in the parking lot of San Mateo's Hillsdale Shopping Center in June 2010 is set to stand trial after receiving treatment at a state mental hospital, according to a news report on KTVU.com. Gregory Elarms is suspected of following Lewis from the San Mateo Medical Center to Hillsdale Shopping Center and shooting him once in the stomach with a .44-caliber handgun outside his car on June 9, 2010, prosecutors said. About six months after the crime, Elarms contacted San Mateo investigators claiming to have a tip about the unsolved case. As he was being questioned, Elarms allegedly confessed to killing Lewis, even describing the shocked look on Lewis' face after he shot …

San Mateo Police Warn of Traffic, Parking Impacts from Maker Faire

The Maker Faire is coming to the San Mateo County Event Center this weekend.

As another Maker Faire approaches on the Peninsula, the San Mateo Police Department is reminding residents of traffic and parking impacts for the coming weekend. The San Mateo County Event Center will host the Maker Faire on Saturday and Sunday, which is expected to draw between 50,000 and 95,000 visitors in the two-day period, according to the San Mateo Police Department. The San Mateo Police and City Organization, the San Mateo County Expo Center staff, and the Maker Faire Production staff are working collaboratively to minimize the traffic impact. Suspected Caltrain Vending Machine Thiefs Appear in Court

The pair are accused of stealing more than $40,000 from machines they were repairing.

A preliminary hearing for two longtime San Mateo County Transit District employees accused of stealing from Caltrain ticket vending machines they were assigned to repair has finally been completed, nearly a year after the two appeared for an initial felony arraignment on June 21, 2011. Orvilla Taylor, 59, and Herbert Todd, 53, appeared in San Mateo Superior Court Tuesday morning before Judge Cliff Cretan. The two have pleaded not guilty to charges of embezzlement and grand theft in connection with the alleged thievery, in which prosecutors say Taylor and Todd, who repaired ticket vending machines for the county’s transit district for more than 20 years, would remove damaged ticket machines and bring them to headquarters. Notre Dame High Students Earn Awards in Essay Contest

Junior Ellie Hurley was awarded the grand prize in the Respect Life Essay Contest

  For the third straight year, a student from Notre Dame High School, Belmont, has been honored as the grand prize winner in an essay contest sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Last week Notre Dame principal Rita Gleason announced the school's four winners of the Annual Respect Life Essay Contest. Junior Ellie Hurley was awarded the grand prize. Ellie was joined by Sophomore Kaylee Kohlmaier as First Prize Winner in San Mateo County and Freshmen Simone Conde and Nicole Bryant who earned Honorable Mention Citations. Students participated in the May 13 Liturgy and Awards Ceremony at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco.  Auxiliary Bishop William Justice celebrated the Liturgy and presented the awards to students in Grades K-12 …

Borg gives birth to baby boy on same weekend team eliminated from Super Regional tournament.

Events happened so fast for College of San Mateo's softball team over the weekend it was hard to keep up. And in the end, a weekend packed with excitement, heartbreak and intrigue and joy, ended with the birth of a baby boy. Nicole Borg, who in the last months of her pregnancy coached CSM to a No. 2 seed in Northern California and the right to host one of the state's four four-team Super Regional tournaments over the weekend, gave birth to Dylan Borg on Mother's Day. She went into labor early Saturday and couldn't be with her team on what turned out to be the last day of the Bulldogs' season.
