Consistent Kindness

He had a difficult beginning.  He didn’t feel safe at all.

When I first met him, he was very shy.  I hardly ever saw him.  Daily I would talk to him and empathize with what I imagined had happened.  I didn’t know if he was taking in my words of kindness.

I’ve been consistently there for him morning after morning.  In the last month or so things have changed.  I’ve earned his trust.

Now when I see him, even before he eats, he comes close to me with his forehead for a long satisfying head and neck rub.  He’s valuing touch even before food.

I’m guessing he feels safer than he ever has.  And I’m delighted.

This is the story of my relationship with a 1 1/2 year old black feral cat that I adopted 6 months ago.  He came into my life to help with the neighborhood rat problem.  That was the original plan.

I don’t know if he’ll actually chase rats.  What I do know is that he and I are now connected.  We have a relationship.

It seems to me that we’re not that much different than this cat.  We thrive with consistent kindness too.  No need for fight, flight, or freeze.  We and our nervous systems like to rest into a kind of consistent kindness.  A sense of being cared about.

Henry Drummond says, “Kindness is the golden key that unlocks the hearts of others.”

How about your heart … is your need for consistent kindness being met?

In peace and love, Teresa
