San Mateo Woman to Compete in Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon

Mandy McDougal of San Mateo, who has competed in the race five times, first raced in the iconic triathlon back in 2005 when she was 15 years old.

A San Mateo woman is planning to mark her seventh Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday.

Mandy McDougal, now 24, first participated in the iconic triathlon when she was 15. She has since competed five times, and every year she races in the triathlon with her father, 50-year-old Stuart McDougal.

The world-famous triathlon sends racers on an icy cold 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco shoreline, an 18 mile hilly bike ride through the Presidio and an eight mile trail run through Golden Gate Recreational Area.

McDougal first started racing at age 14, and loved it after her first race. She averages two triathlons a year, but has been on haitus until recently, and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will be her return to the sport.

She is a Total Immersion Swim Coach with the San Mateo Health Club and trains locally swimming at the College of San Mateo, running Lands End Trails and swimming at Aquatic Park, in San Francisco.

Mandy McDougal’s mom and Stuart McDougal’s wife will join them in San Francisco on race day to cheer on her daughter and husband at the finish line.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
