Bike Advocacy Summit

Hosted by Sustainable San Mateo County and Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Professional advocates, politicians, public agency employees, industry representatives, public health officials, and other community members are invited to participate in a half-day event focused on promoting the bicycle and smart urban planning for health, environmental security, and enhanced communities.

Participants will learn about and discuss:
• How promoting the bicycle improves life in San Mateo County.
• How bicycles and active transportation can be integrated into transit-oriented development.
• How the advocacy community can work with government representatives, community groups, and corporations to effectively promote change.

Section 1: Where do we want to go?

Keynote: Scott Bricker, Director of America Walks and Former Executive Director of Bicycle Transportation Alliance in Portland will share his insights about how to successfully bring cycling into the mainstream

Section 2: Where are we now?

Panel #1: Government policy making 
Panelists will address how the advocacy community can work with government organizations and representatives to effectively promote change.
Panel #2: Community engagement events 
Panelists will explore how bike advocates can expand community interest in cycling through community events and grassroots efforts.
Panel #3: Corporate support of cycling
Panelists will highlight what their corporations are doing to support employee and/or customer cycling and explore the challenges and opportunities of getting more companies to do similar programs.

Section 3: How do we get there from here?

Working session
In moderated small groups, participants will share “aha” moments from the day so far, and brainstorm about possible next steps and ways to work together.
“Share out” and wrap up
Group leaders will share the best ideas that came out of their sessions and explain how participants will keep in touch moving forward.
