Local Grads Named National Merit Scholars

Nineteen high school graduates from San Mateo County have received the coveted National Merit Scholarship.

Of all the honors, awards, scholarships and prizes bestowed upon a high school senior, the National Merit Scholarship is one of the most coveted - and in 2012, San Mateo County has its fair share of scholars.

According to an article in Thursday's San Mateo County Times, 19 of the county's top high school grads, both private and public, have received National Merit Scholarships in 2012.

The article states that the Illinois-based monetary scholarships are funded by corporations, colleges and universities and by the National Merit Scholarship program itself.  Winners are chosen based on standardized test scores, academic performance and other related accomplishments and evaluations.

The San Mateo Union High School District has several winners on the list.

Patch would like to say, congratulations to all!

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
