San Mateo County to Host Anonymous Gun Buyback

Cash will be given in exchange for weapons.

UPDATE, 5:20 P.M. - Local Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo), whose office is helping fund the cash back people can receive at this event, said the event will be anonymous.

"Any individual can surrender weapons, no questions asked," the Congresswoman said.

"Fewer guns mean fewers accidents and fewer chances for guns to fall into the wrong hands.”

-------------------------------------------------

In an effort to crack down on local violence following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shoooting last month, San Mateo County is holding a gun buyback event at the county event center.

At the event, gun owners will receive $100 per handgun, shotgun and rifle and $200 for assault weapons as classified in the state of California.

The event is a joint effort of the Sheriff’s Office, Supervisor Adrienne Tissier and the office of U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, who is providing the funding for the buyback, the Daily Journal reported.

The county last held a buyback 10 to 12 years ago at Coyote Point in conjunction with the San Francisco Giants, San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks said. Instead of cash, guns were traded for tickets.

The gun buyback is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 at the San Mateo County Event Center, 2495 S. Delaware St., San Mateo. For more information call 257-3503 ext. 9. Please transport unloaded firearms in the trunk of a vehicle.

Can someone tell us what is classified as a assault weapon in California?
Jennifer van der Kleut January 19, 2013 at 02:59 AM
"In California, an 'assault weapon' is defined as a semi-automatic rifle with both a pistol grip and a detachable magazine, among other features."

Suckers.

Local school test scores. What do you think about latest scores? Oh, that's right, we don't talk about boring stuff like schools or planning commissions or downtown development on Patch anymore. San Bruno and SSF get to share our pearls of wisdom on gun control and the presidential inauguration with folks from Watsonville and Glendora and Sacramento. I'm sure they are just waiting to hear from us.

So Mr. Good Citizen takes his gun to the buyback. He hands over the gun to the authorities and is given $100 cash AND a citation for unknowingly transporting a firearm without a locking mechanism. He hands the $100 back to the authority to pay the citation and WOOLLAH...his weapon has been successfully confiscated. He returns home scratching his head, but happy knowing he has no gun, no cash, and a sore butt. His weapon is handed over to the Dept. of Justice, and Eric Holder, who then sell his weapon to Mexicans at a very sizeable profit. Welcome to Obamerica. Pure genius.

Bucksnort, I think you've been snorting too much of something. A little paranoid? Can people like you just stay at home and protect your guns and be paranoid on your own and not bother us? We'd love that. Now go, yes, go. Run along. Back to your cave. There you go, run along.

This young woman was anti-guns. She did her research. You can't ban evil. http://www.ijreview.com/2013/01/31106-kira-davis-you-cant-ban-evil/

Yep. I agree. Although it is a county buy-back so I'm not as annoyed about this particular article as many.

Bicksnort, Aren't making up stuff? Like the NRA does? Lies will get you no where its a VOLUNTARY buyback, but you neanrthals don't get it. Until one of your own family gets shot and the answer is "Well if he had a gun..." Newsflash! Gabby Giffords had a GLOCK and that didn't help her at all! When she launched her new PAC called "Americans for Responsible Solutions" and yes she still has her glock. Of course you are a NRA troll come here to disrupt convo about the gun buyback. Please move to "The Citadel" And some of the stuff you imply here.... under BushCo you would of been arrest for TREASON!
wolfone January 19, 2013 at 04:04 PM

So they finally had to come out and admit it, now that the Coroner has released some info along with Police. An AR-15 Rifle or the so-called "Assault Weapon" was not used in the school shooting. The shooter even tried weeks earlier to buy a Rifle but was turned down in the background check. So he had to kill his Mother to steal her rifle. There were initial reports right after the shooting, that Police found the AR-15 Rifle in his car, NOT IN THE SCHOOL. The Rifle was not used. The Shooter went into the school with 4 handguns. Not an Assault Rifle as the media has charged. I remember in the intitial hours of this shooting, the Police said they found the Rifle in the car. But the News Media had a Pre-Planned Attack already waiting, to ban so-called assault weapons and jumped on that line of reporting, knowing it was a lie. Including people like Piers Morgan who said the shooter used an AR-15 that shoots hundreds of rounds per minute, as if it were a machine gun. Could it be that the Democrat Liberals and the Media were pushing for the new law, hoping they could do it, before the Coroner released the info. I'm betting on it. http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/50208495#50208495

Welcome to how messed up our society really is! They believe whatever is put forth, no one wants to think for themselves or read between the lines, everyone trusts the government, it's ridiculous! Doesn't matter republican, democrat etc they all have an agenda and it rarely serves the people! The media is sickening!

Jo, you video was dated Dec. 15. On Dec. 19. The coroner confirmed that the calibre of the bulltets was .223 from the AR15. Lanza shot himself with a 9mm. And the long gun found in the trunk was a semiautomatic shotgun. He chose the weapons that would be easiest to control and fire as quickly as possible.
Jim C January 19, 2013 at 05:43 PM
I'm not sure why we're PAYING people to dispose of their unwanted guns. Seems to me they should be paying us for this service. BUT, I don't have a big problem with the gun buyback. These are probably people who shouldn't have guns because they don't know how to use them, so it's probably in the public's interest to get the guns out of their hands. And to the extent that these guns might not be stolen out of a closet or used in a suicide attempt, it's a net positive.
Jim C January 19, 2013 at 05:44 PM
I believe Lou is correct. Initial reports were that no rifle was used, but that was incorrect.
Jo Tog January 19, 2013 at 05:53 PM
Actually, I agree with your statement. If you are unable to properly secure your firearms maybe you should buy security or sell them.
Lou Covey, The Local Motive January 19, 2013 at 06:28 PM
When I heard about this A few weeks ago, I called county authorities and pointed out that in previous buy backs, what was turned in was largely inoperable. I'm happy to see someone was listening and the cash reward will be based on the quality of the firearm.

Why are we not more focused on North Korea building long range missiles? How many people will die with one nuclear missile versus the guns used at Sandy?
Jim Ahl January 20, 2013 at 04:28 PM
NO. Borrowing 40% of the cost toentice lawfull citizens to give up their firearms is a misguided waste. I would like to know the truth about fast & furious giving guns to gangs.
Andrew Goldstein January 21, 2013 at 02:08 AM
I cannot believe that some of you actually think the gun buyback is a bad thing. Have you ever been a victim of a violent crime? Some of you seem so informed, yet others have no respect for trying to make a small difference. You are doing this public service such an injustice to think there is another motive except to prevent future violence. Because Andrew we don't live in North Korea, we live here in a country with 11 mass shootings last year. Some would argue that's a problem.
Cletus Quick Draw Derringer January 23, 2013 at 05:54 AM
An assault weapon doesn't exist. Its a made up term by gun grabber Leftists like Jackie Speer, Diane Feinstein and all the other brown shirt liberals. In their world they think taking guns ends violence, when in reality only the criminals will be better armed. Look at NY, dumbass Cuomo's 7 round limit has law enforcement now at a disadvantage since criminals don't follow laws. Thats the whole point missed on these politicians who's only real goal is POWER AND CONTROL.
Cletus Quick Draw Derringer January 23, 2013 at 05:55 AM
Shorter: Assault weapon = anything. A rock, bat, pipe, or "evil" looking gun.
Cletus Quick Draw Derringer January 23, 2013 at 06:00 AM
A bigger difference would be had if criminals had stiffer penalties and less revolving door sentences. That, and citizens should not be treated like criminals, and should be allowed to carry with a concealed permit. This would stop much crime as shown in CCW states, and statistics prove Gun control causes MORE Crime like in Chicago and other places I could point to. Fact, murders are at their lowest rate in years. Citing "mass" shootings is just pure emotional argument used to disarm responsible gun owners. If Obama was so "concerned" he would have paid attention to all the homocides in Chicago last year...or the year before or the year before. Demagogue, divide, and distract. Thats all this witch hunt is. Little facts, or rational, practical solutions.

By GangBangers or the Mentally Ill. Or a combined list? I think you need to be more specific.
