The 17-year-old girl was hit by a car while crossing Port Royal early Friday morning.

A 17-year-old Foster City girl was seriously injured after being struck by a car Friday morning, according to the Foster City Police Department.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Edgewater Boulevard and Port Royal in Foster City at about 6:50 a.m., police said.

According to the initial investigation, the girl was crossing Port Royal when she was struck by a 2014 BMW 528i traveling north on Edgewater Boulevard.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the pedestrian on the roadway badly injured and immediately began treatment.

The girl was transported to Stanford Medical Center where she was undergoing treatment as of early Friday afternoon.

The driver remained at the collision scene and has been cooperating with investigating officers, police said.

The names of the pedestrian and driver are not being released by police at this time.

Anyone with additional information related to this accident is asked to contact the Foster City Police Department at (650) 286-3300 or the Tip Line at (650) 286-3323.

"This tragic incident punctuates the need for drivers to always be aware of pedestrians in and around roadways and be prepared to yield for them," Foster City Police Chief Matthew Martel said in a statement.

"Pedestrians can be very hard to see, especially in bad weather or during times of darkness. Drivers should not overtake and pass other vehicles that have stopped for pedestrians," he said.

Additionally, pedestrians should always exercise due caution when crossing the street, according to police.

Pedestrians are reminded to only cross at corners or in designated crosswalks while also adhering to traffic control devices. It is always a good idea for pedestrians to try and make eye contact with a driver before crossing in front of them.
