San Mateo Woman Arrested on Suspicion of Trying to Murder Mother With Hammer

A 57-year-old San Mateo woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and other charges for allegedly attacking her mother with a hammer early Sunday morning, police said. 
 
Newark police said a woman called them just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday to report that she had assaulted her mother inside a residence at 7155 Mayhews Landing Road. 
 
Police said that when officers arrived at the house, Cindy Lynn Burleigh admitted to them that she had attacked her mother with a hammer. Officers then found Burleigh's 75-year-old mother bleeding from her head. 

She was immediately transported to a trauma center to be treated for multiple skull fractures and is currently is in critical condition, according to police. Newark police said that in addition to attempted murder, Burleigh has been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and elder abuse causing great bodily injury. 
 
Burleigh is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail. Police said they will present their case against her to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday for charges to be filed.
