San Mateo Police Increase Presence in Downtown Theater Area

Following Friday morning's tragic shooting at a movie theater in Colorado, San Mateo police say they will increase security in San Mateo's downtown theater area this weekend.

The San Mateo Police Department on Friday afternoon issued a statement promising to increase security in the city's downtown theater area, and expressing condolences for those affected by the morning's .

The city of San Mateo is lowering all flags at city facilities to half mast in recognition of the tragedy, which has claimed the lives of 12 people and injured dozens more.

The mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., occurred at a midnight screening of the new movie "The Dark Knight Rises," authorities said. James Holmes, 24, has been arrested in connection with the shooting, Aurora police said.

"Our thoughts and heartfelt wishes go out to the families and community in Aurora," city officials said in a collective statement.

The Police Department has taken additional proactive measures to reassure the community and increase security in the city's downtown cinema area.

Police officials have met with the local cinema management team to review safety procedures and increase security awareness for this weekend.

Authorities say there is no reason to believe that this is other than an isolated incident. However, in an abundance of caution, police will be increasing community police officers in the downtown cinema area over the weekend to provide a reassuring presence in order to quell concerns, and ensure there are no incidents in reaction to this event.

Anyone who sees a crime or suspicious activity is urged to call 911 or the Police Department's non-emergency line at 650-522-7700.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
