Man in Water off San Mateo Bridge is Rescued

This is the second rescue of an individual in the past three days.

UPDATE 5:50 p.m. A spokesman for the Hayward Fire Department confirms the man in the water has been rescued.

Hayward Fire Captain Thor Poulsen says his team, arriving first on scene, threw a life ring to the man which he securely fastened around his body. A rescue rig was deployed by Hayward Fire as the Foster City Fire Department secured their boat with the rigging of another Hayward Engine. The man rescued was taken by Foster City watercraft, moved to an AMR ambulance and transported to Eden Trauma Center in Castro Valley in good condition at approximately 5:30 p.m. The man is said to be conscious and responsive.

Poulsen says the man jumped from the bridge into the water, and believes the man is the same person that jumped only two days earlier.

The Coast Guard confirms the current rescue of a man in the water at the East end (Hayward side) of the San Mateo Bridge 1.5 miles West of the toll plaza.

Lt. j.g. Jeremy Pichette confirms for Patch the man was reported in the water at 4:40pm.

The Coast Guard has sent two boats and a helicopter, is being aided by a helicopter owned by operated by the East Bay Regional Park District, and boats owned by the Foster City Fire Department and the Alameda County Fire Department.

The person in the water is described by witnesses as an adult male, said to be treading water and responsive, according to Pichette.

This is the second incident of a person in the water off the San Mateo Bridge within the past three days.
