The driver of a truck that crashed and caught fire on Interstate Highway 280 in Millbrae earlier this month has died from his injuries, a California Highway Patrol officer said Wednesday.
The crash was reported at 9:57 a.m. on Highway 280 near Hillcrest Avenue, the CHP reported.
A utility truck traveling south on Highway 280 veered off to the right side of the roadway, where the truck collided with a call box and then traeled about 20-25 feet down the embankment, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel.
The truck then collided with a tree and caught fire, trapping the driver inside, Montiel said.
A passenger in the truck was able to get out, but the driver had to be extricated by fire personnel from San Bruno and Millbrae Fire Departments.
Both occupants were transported to San Francisco General Hospital with moderate and major burns, Montiel said. The driver succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
It does not appear drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision, according to the CHP.
The California Highway Patrol is asking the Good Samaritans that stopped to assist the victims of this crash prior to the arrival of Emergency Personnel to contact Officer Burch and provide a statement at 650-369-6261.
