Know a Hero in San Mateo?

The American Red Cross is looking for hero nominations in San Mateo for its 2013 San Mateo County Heroes Breakfast.

Do you know someone in San Mateo who has made a difference, saved a life or performed a courageous act?

The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter is looking for honoree nominations for its 2013 San Mateo County Heroes Breakfast, slated for May 30 at the Poplar Creek Grill in San Mateo.

The Bay Area Chapter is seeking nominations for the Hero Awards, which recognizes members of the community who have shown courage, dedication, and character through acts of heroism and kindness. These people could be your neighbors, co-workers, friends, or family.

San Mateo residents are encouraged to nominate a hero for one of the following categories:

  • Lifesaving Hero, Adult: An adult who has performed an extraordinary lifesaving act, using skills such as CPR or first aid.
  • Lifesaving Hero, Youth: A youth who has performed an extraordinary lifesaving act, using skills such as CPR or first aid.
  • Act of Courage Hero: An adult or youth who has performed an extraordinary act of courage.
  • Act of Kindness & Philanthropy Hero: An adult or youth who has shown an extreme act of kindness or selflessness.
  • Community Service Hero, Individual: An adult or youth who has performed great community service.
  • Community Service Hero, Organization: A business or organization that has performed great community service.
  • Animal Rescue Hero: An animal that has protected a human in a time of need or a person who has rescued an animal from a traumatic situation.

A committee of San Mateo County community leaders will select the Heroes Award recipients. All nominees must work or reside in San Mateo County, although the heroic acts may have occurred elsewhere. The heroic act must have occurred between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2012.

The deadline to submit nominations is March 15, 2013.

To nominate a hero, purchase tickets to the event or for more details about the event, please visit the San Mateo County Heroes website at www.redcross.org/SMCHeroes.

PS: Ideally, everybody will be able to sign up at the college website. But I have to acknowledgeRead More that some of the language may not be perfectly as clear as we'd like, especially if this is your first enrollment. So, if you need any assistance (or maybe aren't computer-savvy) the very nice Registrar Office people can assist you on 650/574-6165. Just tell them you want to sign up for Summer semester, Real Estate Practice 110 class, Course Reference number 54642 and that you'd like to complete the enrollment today. You'll like the class once we get you in! Thank you!

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
