Borg gives birth to baby boy on same weekend team eliminated from Super Regional tournament.
Events happened so fast for College of San Mateo's softball team over the weekend it was hard to keep up. And in the end, a weekend packed with excitement, heartbreak and intrigue and joy, ended with the birth of a baby boy. Nicole Borg, who in the last months of her pregnancy coached CSM to a No. 2 seed in Northern California and the right to host one of the state's four four-team Super Regional tournaments over the weekend, gave birth to Dylan Borg on Mother's Day. She went into labor early Saturday and couldn't be with her team on what turned out to be the last day of the Bulldogs' season. CSM was eliminated from the tournament in heartbreaking fashion, with the Bulldogs two outs away from advancing to the finals when they lost to …

Baseball team lost to Consumnes River in Sunday's finals. The softball team was eliminated after two Saturday losses.
A long day ended with a tough loss for College of San Mateo's baseball team, as the host Bulldogs lost to Consumnes River 13-3 in a California Community College Super Regional final on Sunday. CSM (32-12) was 3-3 in the tournament, losing two of three games to CRC. The Bulldogs avenged an 8-1 loss to CRC on Saturday with a 7-6 win earlier in the day on Sunday. But CSM needed to win twice and couldn't close the deal in the finale. Mark Hurley was the offensive star for CSM on Sunday. He went a combined 6 for 9 on the day, with three hits including a triple and two RBI in the first game. Andrew Herrera (1-1) allowed four runs on five hits in relief of starter Luke McCreesh in the finale. McCreesh lasted just one inning, allowing three runs (…

After an 0-5 WCAL start, Serra won 11 of its next 12 league games, culminating with a 7-2 win against St. Ignatius on Thursday in a league tournament championship game. The victory gives the Padres a share of the league title.
As Serra High baseball coach Craig Gianinno readied his team Thursday night just before the start of a West Catholic Athletic League tournament championship game, he was caught off guard by a player's question as his team gathered under the lights at Santa Clara University's Stephen Schott Stadium. "He just walked up to me and said 'what's different about tonight versus the first time you went' " to the finals, Gianinno said. "I thought it was a great question." The first time Gianinno went to the finals was in 2010, his first year coaching the Padres, and it didn't go so well, with Serra losing to Mitty 8-5 on the same field. "I don't remember much of it," he told his players on Thursday, "but I'll say this to all of you: Enjoy the …

Padres (18-12) share the league crown with St. Francis-Mountain View, the round robin champion.
An assortment of images and comments gathered from commuters who shunned four wheels for a two-wheeler on Thursday.
Manito Velasco/experienced biker (traveling from Burlingame to San Francisco every day): "I hate walking. It takes a little bit of moxi to try it in the beginning, but it gets addictive after awhile. I don't have time to go to the gym anyway, so with this - two birds with one stone." Julie Walsh/first time biker (traveling from South San Francisco to Mountain View): "We've never biked to work, so we're taking baby steps, and taking Caltrain to Mountain View, and then biking five miles to work. It's nice, it's a nice day, not too cold, so it's more enticing." ("And do you think you'll do this tomorrow?") "No. Well, I might do it again if it's not to strenuous, and timewise, we're really experimenting today. Google, where we work, was …

Energizer stations for those who bike to work will be set up at two San Mateo Caltrain stations on Thursday.
As thousands of Bay Area bicyclists prepare to bike to work on the region's annual Bike to Work Day Thursday, Caltrain and SamTrans are reminding San Mateo residents that biking to work every day is a good idea. To accomodate those who choose to bike to work, SamTrans buses are equipped with bike racks, which hold two bikes, agency officials said. Two additional bikes are allowed inside the bus, depending on passenger loads. Only single-rider, two-wheel bicycles are permitted. No motor, tandem or three-wheel bikes are allowed. There is no age limit for riders using the bike racks or bringing bikes on board the bus, but riders must be able to load and unload their bikes without help from the operator. Last year, Caltrain completed a project…
