Women's Hall of Fame Honoree Cheryl Sinclair Tells Her Story

Sinclair talks to Patch about her 20-plus years in the health care industry in San Mateo County, work that has earned her a spot in the Women's Hall of Fame.

Cheryl Sinclair always found her work to be gratifying. But she never expected it to lead to the honor she received earlier this year.

For her tireless work in the health care field, particularly with the elderly and low-income residents of San Mateo County, Sinclair was chosen to be among the 2011 honorees of San Mateo County’s Commission on the Status of Women, the county body that selects women to each year.

Sinclair, a Pacifica resident, has lived on the coastside of San Mateo County for 23 years, in which time she has contributed to various health care organizations -- including serving as program and community outreach director to the Coastside Adult Day Health Center and chair to the RotaCare Coastside Clinic Advisory Council.

“I’m the major fundraiser for Rotacare,” she said.

According to a statement from the Commission on the Status of Women, “without (Sinclair’s) contributions, the clinic could not sustainably provide over 1,200 patient visits per year to those without medical insurance.”

Sinclair was nominated to the Women’s Hall of Fame by her Rotacare colleagues Dr. Josefina Enriquez and Karen Larson.

"Our annual Women's Hall of Fame and Young Women of Excellence Awards are a testament that women and girls make a tremendous difference in our communities," said Jei Africa, president of the Commission, in a statement.

Watch Sinclair’s story, in her own words, from her first job as a teen serving food at a retirement home to her more than 20-year career (and counting) in the health care field in San Mateo County.
