Volunteer Opportunities in San Mateo
The annual bayfront cleanup, pedestrian and bicycle counts, and book sale volunteers are three ways to give back to your community.
Looking for a way (or maybe several) to give back to your community? The city of San Mateo has announced the following upcoming volunteer opportunities that will benefit the whole town.
1. Annual Bayfront Cleanup – Saturday, 9/21
Help us pick up debris on September 21st in celebration of the 29th Anniversary of the Bayfront Cleanup!
FREE "Volunteer Thank You" BBQ, entertainment and prizes will follow the cleanup. Bring your friends to Ryder Park between 7:30am and 9:00am to register. Ideal opportunity for earning school students community service hours.
Volunteers will pick up debris and litter along the Bayfront Trail, Marina Lagoon, and Tidelands Park. Events like this demonstrate how serious our community is about keeping our Bay healthy.

2. Pedestrian and Bicyclist Counts (annual count) – Saturday 9/7 and 9/14
Volunteers Needed! Help our City become more pedestrian and bike friendly. Get involved in this important effort to help the City of San Mateo improve the safety and comfort of bicyclists and pedestrians. Your efforts will be part of a National Project collecting count data from cities across the United States. Brief training on 9/4 and 9/5; Saturday count dates: 9/7 and 9/14 from 10am-noon. Brief training session required on either 9/4 or 0/5 from 6-7pm in Room “B” at City Hall, 330 W. 20th Avenue.

3. Book Sale Volunteers (3 Days). Friday 9/20 – Sunday 9/22
Volunteers are needed to assist at the annual Harvest Book Fair at the San Mateo Main Library on Friday, 9/20 –Sunday, 9/22. Assist at the book sale straightening and replacing books on display tables, tally large sales, check receipts at the door, and offer help as needed. Customer-friendly volunteers are needed who can follow directions, work independently, and help make this event a fun, financial success.
