Everyday Heroes Honored at San Mateo Ceremony

Bay Area chapter of the American Red Cross holds its annual awards breakfast.

The Bay Area chapter of the American Red Cross is celebrating everyday heroes this morning at an awards breakfast in San Mateo.

The annual event recognizes people and organizations that displayed extraordinary courage and kindness in the community, organizers said.

The individuals being honored this morning include a woman who collected quilts to comfort those affected by the 2010 San Bruno explosion, a boy who raised money for disasters around the world using his musical talent, and a father and son who rescued several elderly women in the aftermath of the San Bruno explosion, according to organizers.

The awardees being honored this morning are Julie McAuliffe and Kit Morse of San Mateo, Shelter Network of San Mateo, Robert Petrini and Bob Petrini Jr. of San Bruno, Matthew Bernardo of San Bruno, Charles Simons of Burlingame, Joshua Allen Hui of San Bruno, Sherri Camps and her dog Sara of San Carlos, and Jon B. Grant of Foster City.

The awards breakfast began at 8 a.m. at the at 1700 Coyote Point Drive in San Mateo.
