VIDEO: Redwood City Olympian Advances to Quarterfinals

Molly Vandemoer is currently competing in London with the USA Olympic Sailing team.

After nine matches with the USA Sailing team, it is still uncertain if Redwood City resident and Olympian Molly Vandemoer will return from London donning an Olympic medal.

The 30-year-old volunteer Stanford sailing coach, along with teammates Debbie Capozzi and Anna Tunnicliffe, began the games with a narrow win to Denmark but also suffered an early setback with a loss to Spain in their second round robin match.

Another loss to the undefeated Australian team, currently in first place, and Russia, tied with Spain for second place, has positioned the USA Olympic Sailing team in fourth place with six points.

With just one more day of round-robin racing, scheduled for August 4, the USA Olympic Sailing team will have its last opportunity to solidify their placement before the quarterfinals. Though only the top eight of the 12 competing teams will be allowed to move forward, Team USA has a guaranteed place in the quarterfinals.

"The round-robin, you try to win as many races as possible and make it through to the quarterfinals," Tunnicliffe said. "Everybody is really good and there is going to be a battle in all of the lineups."

The team, which has been together since 2010, has received medals at four ISAF World Cup events and received the gold medal in the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Cup.

The team will compete in their final round robin matches with Olympic teams from Great Britain, tied with France and Finland for fifth place, and Sweden.

The final medals will be awarded August 11.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
