The San Mateo Slammers dominated the 13th annual Jan Macpherson Memorial Softball Tournament hosted by the San Carlos Youth Softball Association over Memorial Day weekend.

Slammers teams in four age divisions took home first place: the 14s B team, 12s B team, 10s B team, and 10s C team. The two Slammers 8s teams also played well! More than 900 athletes from 75 teams representing two-dozen communities around the Bay Area participated.

The San Mateo Slammers are All-Star travel teams made up of girls who recently finished regular season play through the San Mateo Youth Softball Association (SMYSA). Chanteloup Field, at Beresford Park, is home to SMYSA and will be the location of the 2012 Feely Classic Tournament from June 8-10.

The Feely is a class B tournament for softball teams in four different age groups from all over the Bay Area. Tournament fees cover the costs of hosting the tournament while snack bar profits go into the Feely Foundation Scholarship Fund. To date, the Foundation has awarded over 100,000 dollars in scholarship money to deserving senior high school girls who have played softball in the area.

The Foundation was started in honor of George Feely who passed away suddenly in 1989. George introduced men’s fastpitch to the San Mateo area in the 1970s. He was also instrumental in the girls’ youth organization in the 70's and 80's.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
