Ryan Lochte, who two weeks ago bested rival Michael Phelps in the 400m individual medley, was allegedly informed by an Olympic official he could not sport his signature diamond-encrusted tooth grill at the award ceremony.
The official added that he would not be able to receive the Gold Medal if he wore the grill.
After the medal was given to him, however, Lochte took the grill out of his pocket and posed for the cameras in his signature style.
Lochte took to a video to defend the act.
“It’s a way of showing my unique personality to everyone,” said Lochte in the video.
The grill reportedly cost $25,000.
Editor's Note: The original article wrote that Lochte won the gold Saturday, when this was in fact two Saturdays ago.
