Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Announces Lastest Inductees
San Mateo native Randy Gomez is among the group.
Former San Francisco Giants’ catcher and San Mateo native Randy Gomez joins nine others from San Mateo County who will be inducted into the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony on June 11 at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds’ Event Center.
Gomez starred as a quarterback in football and as a baseball player at Serra High, College of San Mateo and the University of Utah before he was drafted by the Giants in the 25th round of the 1980 First-Year Player Draft.
Gomez appeared in 14 games with the Giants during the 1984 season, a year in which Barry Bonds was a sophomore at Arizona State.
Also to be inducted:
Carlmont High grad Gale Dean Andaluz, a hard-working, pioneer softball pitcher who set records at San Jose State University.
Carlmont High grad Selena Ho, a gifted basketball player whose prolific three-point shooting at the University of Pacific still resonates.
Jefferson High grad Jim Honeywell, a multi-sport athlete who played football at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Burlingame High grad Ernest “Mel” Moore, a two-way football standout who became a U.S. Navy pilot and spent six years in a North Vietnamese prison.
San Carlos High and Canada College grad Sam Nicolopulos, a longtime teacher-coach who influenced thousands of young people during his tenure.
Sequoia High grad Bill Royer, a standout baseball player who became a Redwood City-San Mateo County political icon.
Burlingame High and Stanford grad Drew Shiller, a multi-sport prep star who was named California’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2005. He played basketball for Stanford and currently works as a basketball analyst for Stanford basketball.
Palo Alto High grad Ted Tollner, a dedicated football coach whose stellar career stretched for a half-century. He began his coaching career at Woodside High, then moved to College of San Mateo before stops at USC, BYU, San Diego State and NFL positions with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Tigers and the Oakland Raiders.
South San Francisco High Canada College grad Jim Zylker, a U.S. Olympic Team soccer player and Peninsula coach who has made an international mark in his sport.
The June 11 event is being presented by the San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, the San Mateo County Event Center and the San Mateo County Times/San Jose Mercury News.
The Hall of Fame honors Peninsulans who have had an impact on the local sports scene and, perhaps, beyond.
During its first 22 years, the Hall of Fame, located at the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City, has grown to include more than 220 people.
