Harlem Globetrotters to Teach Classes in San Mateo Monday and Tuesday

Dizzy Grant and Jacob 'Hops' Tucker will conduct four Summer Skills Clinics at the 24-Hour Fitness in San Mateo on Monday and Tuesday.

Editor's Note: These clinics are not free, as Patch originally reported. The cost for each clinic is $59. We apologize for the discrepancy; the cost of the clinics was not communicated to Patch when our editors were sent information about this event.

San Mateo will get its own small brush with celebrity early this week when two members of the famous Harlem Globetrotters exhibition basketball team will arrive in San Mateo to teach Summer Skills Classes for local kids.

Dizzy Grant and Jacob "Hops" Tucker - the reigning 2011 College Slam Dunk Champion - will be at the at 93 Bovet Road in San Mateo on Monday and Tuesday to teach classes for boys and girls, age 6-14. No basketball experience is required for children to participate.

Children will play scrimmages and practice drills while building confidence and learning social and teamwork skills, organizers say.

Additional perks will be given to families who participate, as well - the family of each child will receive a complimentary ticket voucher to see the Harlem Globetrotters live on their next tour, along with free three-day passes to the 24-Hour Fitness gym, and getting to have their pictures taken with the Harlem Globetrotters, which the team members will autograph.

The San Mateo clinics will take place on Monday, June 25 and Tuesday, June 26. Two sessions will be offered each day - 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. The cost for each clinic is $59.

Space is limited in order to ensure each child gets sufficient time with the Globetrotters players. To register your child for one of the San Mateo clinics, visit the Harlem Globetrotters' Summer Skills Clinic website.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
