Giants' Good Vibes Complicated by Bonds Trial

Franchise's debut as defending champion comes alongside former slugger's court proceedings; fans unable to fully enjoy team's spot atop baseball world without reminders of its tainted past.

Barry Bonds overshadowed the rest of the Giants for much of his 15 years with the team. More than three years after his last swing, he’s still at it – even though he surely wishes he wasn’t in this case.

Today is supposed to be a moment the Giants and their fans will savor – the first time in San Francisco history that the team takes the field as the defending World Series champion. When the Giants line up at Dodger Stadium before the first pitch on Opening Day, the good vibes of the team’s stunning postseason run last fall are sure to come flashing back – and they won’t soon go away with the home opener and championship ring ceremony just over a week away.

But even as the franchise is set to kick off the latest chapter of its extended celebration – in front of a national TV audience and on its rival’s field, no less – Bonds is in many ways upstaging the whole thing.

The former slugger’s trial for perjury and obstruction of justice has dominated headlines for the past two weeks – and it’s still only in the prosecution’s phase. Moreover, the trial has put the focus squarely on the sordid underbelly of baseball and particularly of Bonds’ later years with the Giants.

Current and former players have testified about the game’s steroid culture and how easy it was to obtain performance-enhancing drugs. Kimberly Bell, Bonds’ former mistress, brought to light several unpleasant revelations – including intimate details of their relationship and the culture of ballplayers’ womanizing on the road.

After waiting 56 years for a championship, Giants fans should be able to welcome in the new season by enjoying the team’s perch atop the baseball world without such complications. The franchise’s peak accomplishment in over a half century is being celebrated at the exact time its nadir — as the center of the steroids era — is being scrutinized in federal court.

Memories of the rotation’s storied postseason showing and thoughts of whether Lincecum, Cain & Co. can match those feats are interrupted by word of Jason Giambi’s testimony about how he easily obtained the “cream” and the “clear” from Greg Anderson, Bonds’ former personal trainer and a regular presence in the Giants’ clubhouse in the early 2000’s.

As Giants fans pinch themselves at the thought of the first full seasons from Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner – and turn an excited eye toward the debut of first baseman Brandon Belt, another heralded youngster – along comes news that former Giants outfielder Marvin Benard brought back veterinary steroids he had used in winter ball in Mexico and that he later switched to Human Growth Hormone (HGH) at Anderson’s suggestion.

Just when all seems so bright in the Giants’ universe, we have daily reminders of the tainted Bonds era splashed all over the media.

Say it ain’t so.

WHO CARES?????? Barry Bonds had NOTHING to do with the Giants championship team in 2010 in any way, shape, or form. I think most Giant's fans are only concerned about the guys on the field giving it their all, not some has-been with LOTS of issues to deal with. The season and the trial are SO UNRELATED except in the minds of reporters trying to stir up the muck, and tar the current champs with a large and contrived brush!!! Move on Scott!!!

Completely agree with Harry Smith's comments. BBONDS didn't do anything for the World Series Championship. As part of a documentary team doing Series championships, Bonds is not part of the 2010 champs, though there's no denying he's a Giant. When Bonds was on the team, it was all about him, the 2010 Bochy's team is about a team working together
I'm recommending sports fans to read a magical poem posted in Patch Sports. Thank you , Patch Editor Ms. Himmelstein. What a surprise , it's still ranked # one even after a month it was posted , it's called , October is in Love with the Impossible, which is bein passed around in the MLB, sfgiants site. Real fans believe the Giants can still do the Impossible, a two-feat repeat. Showtime has a documentary preview on the Giants. I was not able to contact the author of the poem.

Barry Bonds was a great Giant!!! I personally enjoyed every moment he brought to the team. If it were not for Barry AT&T would have never happened!! Band-wagoners can jump anytime!

Well put Joe. Did Bonds use steroids? Most likely. Did tons of other guys around the league use performance-enhancing drugs as well? Absolutely. Yet bonds is consistently villainized while others get off without a second thought. As a lifelong fan who cheered Barry on from the minute he came over from Pittsburgh to the minute he walked off the field for the last time, I will never forget how he brought new life to a team no one paid much attention to for years. For me, Bonds' trial and our current season are two separate issues and two separate eras. Bandwagon fans may dismiss Bonds all they want, but those of us who froze at Candlestick during a bleak '96 season when all we had to look forward to were those Bonds at-bats will never dismiss all he did for our team.

Powerful stuff, Scott. (No pun intended) Great story!

I want to know why no other player was investigated, what about Mark McGuire??
Rocky April 5, 2011 at 07:49 pm
Let's be clear about what this trial is. Bonds is being prosecuted for lying to the grand jury, not for steroid use.
Phyllis McArthur April 5, 2011 at 07:59 pm
oh all right then, I still like Bonds though

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
