BASEBALL: Hillsdale's CCS Hopes Get a Boost

Knights pull into tie for fourth in PAL Bay behind 7-0 win over Aragon and Terra Nova's loss; Hillsdale would clinch postseason berth with win in Friday's finale and Terra Nova loss.

The Hillsdale High baseball team made up some ground in the race for one of the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division’s final automatic bids to the Central Coast Section playoffs when it defeated host Aragon 7-0 on Wednesday.

Hillsdale’s win, paired with a loss by Terra Nova, brought the Knights (16-9, 7-6 PAL Bay) into a tie for fourth place in the Bay with Terra Nova, with one game to go. The Bay’s top four finishers all earn automatic CCS berths.

Terra Nova (14-10-1, 7-6) lost 13-0 to El Camino on Wednesday, a game that sealed the outright league title for the Colts, their first-ever in the PAL’s top division.

Burlingame (15-11, 8-5) and Carlmont (17-8, 8-5), both winners on Wednesday, own a one-game lead over Hillsdale and Terra Nova entering Friday’s finales.

Robbie Foiles got the Knights off to a great start to the week as he threw a complete-game shutout against Aragon, allowing only two hits. Senior Tyler Kelly hit two doubles and drove in three runs. Kelly is tied for fourth on the team with 14 RBIs.

Eddie Pagano, who carries a 3.90 ERA in 41 1/3 innings, is expected to start for Hillsdale on Friday against an Aragon team which is 1-7 on the road. First pitch is at 4 p.m. at Hillsdale.

The Dons’ only road win came at Sequoia on March 31. Meanwhile, Hillsdale has won four of its last five league games.

Hillsdale, which reached the CCS Division III championship game last season, needs to win on Friday to avoid the chance that it would not earn an at-large playoff berth. One bonus? In the event of a two-team tie with Terra Nova, the Knights own the tiebreaker by virtue of their superior head-to-head record and would therefore clinch the Bay’s final automatic postseason bid.
