BASEBALL: CSM Eliminated in Super Regionals

Lack of timely hitting proves costly in defeat to Sac City; Bulldogs commit seven errors in two losses.

The College of San Mateo baseball team’s season came to an end with a 6-3 loss to Sacramento City College in the Super Regionals at Solano College in Fairfield on Saturday.

No. 4 seed CSM (27-12, 2-2 playoffs) also lost 16-15 to archrival Ohlone College in an 11-inning slugfest on Friday.

The Bulldogs struggled to string together hits despite a solid performance by Serra grad Justin Maffei (2-for-5, double, triple, two runs scored).

CSM faced an eighth-seeded Sac City team (23-17, 4-1 playoffs) that has been on a groove of late, knocking out top-seeded Feather River in a first-round sweep.

Sac City starter Kyle DeVore struck out eight Bulldogs in a strong 7 2/3 innings. DeVore kept the visitors in check throughout the game, only giving up two earned runs.

CSM starter Daniel Chavez (Serra) kept the Panthers hitless for the first three innings, but faced problems in the fourth after giving up two singles and a walk. Sac City would score three unearned runs after two costly Bulldog errors to take a 3-1 lead.

Chavez averted further damage by getting No. 9 hitter Ryan Pudwell to ground out to shortstop Riley Goulding with the bases loaded.

Trailing 6-1 in the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs put two runs on the board but fell short of a comeback as Sac City closer Sean Martin gave up a lone hit over the final 1 1/3 innings.

The Bulldogs went 2-for-17 with runners on base, including just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position on Saturday. But the errors were the main flaw this weekend as they committed five against Ohlone and two more against Sac City.

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
