Sweet, Lonely Blondes Need You This Valentine's Day

I won’t drag this out and say things like “heavy petting expected.” This won’t be one of those pet profiles dripping with syrup and puns.  The two blondes are a pair of 13-year-old Cocker Spaniels – Sugar, a female, and Almond, a male. We’ve never seen a pair more bonded than these two and we’ll do everything in our power to make sure they remain together during their remaining years.

Despite their age, they are full of life and wag their little stumpy tails a mile a minute whenever people are around them, which is often in our adoption center.  So far, no adopters, but they have plenty of fans among our staff and volunteers. There’s nothing we would like more than to see them in a home this Valentine’s Day.

Who could possibly give up a pair of 13-year-old dogs? Someone with a big heart, that’s who. Sugar and Almond’s “mom” who I’ll call “Lisa” hasn’t had the dogs all 13 years. She rescued them three years ago, when they were 10.  The pair was living in a yard, devoid of true human companionship, and spent most of their time tied to a tree. Lisa convinced the owner to give up the dogs.  She felt she could give them a better life, but had also hoped the dogs would be good for her disabled daughter.  She really tried to make it work, but her daughter’s needs became too great. Lisa couldn’t be a good mom and a good doggie mom. Though it tore her up, she brought the dogs to our shelter.

The dogs were on our radar since day one.  Would they be healthy enough to adopt out?  How could we get them extra attention in a shelter filled with many dogs, each in need of a good home?

Two months ago, I targeted Valentine’s week in my mind. If Sugar and Almond weren’t adopted before the week of Cupid’s big day, we would empty our quiver and shoot every love arrow their way.

Today is Wednesday. Valentine’s Day is two days away. We need one person, one couple, or one family to open their home and heart.

I read a great story recently about a group of nuns living out-of-state who rescued a pit bull. I can see the reality show now: Pit Bulls and Penguins. I’ll take it over Kardashians any day. Our two Cockers, however, would just as happy with nuns or fashionistas. I’m not sure they could keep up with Kardashians, but they’ve got plenty of spunk and will do just fine as long as they have each other.
