Does it bother anyone else that the high school summer vacation is 2 weeks off of the traditional-calendar elementary school summer vacation? Pretty much everyone with more than one child will at some point have kids in both high school and middle or elementary school at the same time. It's pretty annoying as a parent to have 4 weeks over the summer where some of my kids are in school and some aren't (2 weeks at the beginning of June when my high schooler was out of school but my elementary schoolers were still in, and vice versa the last 2 weeks of August). Furthermore, there are very few summer camps during the last 2 weeks of August... probably because the high-school aged counselors are no longer available. Why don't the school districts coordinate their calendars better? (for that matter, why don't we have a unified school district like pretty much everyone else in the country... although that's a more difficult issue to change).
