CONTEST: Patch to Reward One Great Teacher - Vote Now!

In honor of World Teacher Appreciation Day, Patch is searching for one of the most beloved local teachers, to reward him or her with volunteer hours from Patch editors and money for school supplies.

Friday, Oct. 5 is World Teacher Appreciation Day.

As many of us know, teachers are often underpaid and undervalued, yet they are incredibly important members of our community, who help shape our children's lives and create the leaders of tomorrow.

San Mateo Patch and Foster City Patch are on the hunt to find one of our most influential and beloved local teachers, so we can reward him or her with prizes and say thanks for all he or she does.

Nominate your favorite teacher - or, parents, nominate your favorite out of all your children's teachers - and tell us why he or she is so special and deserves to win our Teacher Appreciation Contest, in the comments section of this article below.

Teachers from all public and private schools located in San Mateo or Foster City, who teach kindergarten through 12th grade, are eligible to win.

The local San Mateo or Foster City teacher who wins the most nominations or votes will be given two hours of volunteer time by a Patch editor! The editor will come to the teacher's classroom and help with whatever the teacher needs that day, be it talking to the students about journalism or other community issues, or even just cleaning desks and sharpening pencils.

In addition, since all 13 Peninsula Patch sites are holding this contest, we will also select a grand prize-winning teacher. The teacher that receives, overall, the most nominations or votes out of all 13 winning teachers will also receive a $50 gift card to purchase school supplies with, in addition to the two volunteer hours.

Nominations and votes can be logged on this article through 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. The winning teachers will be announced bright and early Friday morning, Oct. 12.

So, please nominate your favorite teacher below, and feel free to upload a photo of him or her as well!

**Note: To nominate or vote for a teacher, please include the teacher's name AND the school and grade he or she teaches for!

Please SHARE this article with friends and family so they can nominate and vote for their teachers as well!

OFFICIAL RULES:

1. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.

2. To nominate or vote for a teacher, enter a comment in the comments section of this article. Please be sure to include the teacher's name AND the school and grade he/she teaches for.

3. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. The winner will be announced in Patch's morning newsletter on Friday, Oct. 12.

4. You may enter a teacher once. You may choose to nominate more than one teacher, but you may only enter each teacher once.

5. One winning teacher from a San Mateo or Foster City school will be declared the local winner, based on who receives the most nominations or votes in the comments. In addition, the winning teacher from all 13 Peninsula Patch sites who receives the most votes overall will also win a grand prize.

6. Prizes: The winning local teacher will receive two hours of volunteer time from the Patch editor of his/her hometown Patch site. The teacher and editor will agree upon a day that works for both parties, and the editor will come to the teacher's classroom to help out with whatever the teacher needs that day, for a period of two hours. In addition, the grand prize-winning teacher out of all 13 Peninsula Patch sites will also receive a $50 gift card toward the purchase of school supplies. The teacher can choose his or her favorite school supply store that Patch will purchase the gift card from.

7. To see a complete list of Patch's official contest rules, see the Word document in the photo section of this article, which is downloadable.

I nominate Ms. Kristina Ayala of Brewer Island Elementary (teaches 5th grade). She is sincere in her approach, sets clear expectations for her students and holds them accountable consistently and treats them as an individual. She is a model for all public school teachers.

Ms. Lani Lavine Audubon Elementary, 3rd grade. Ms. Lavine, takes the time to get to know each child, their strength and weakness, she uses this knowledge to help them do their best and aim for higher goals. She is truly amazing!
Lindsay Marshall October 5, 2012 at 09:22 pm
Ms. Tara Valentine is a Kindergarden/1st grade Teacher at North Shoreview Montessori. She has gone above and beyond in helping both my sons get started in school. She has been able to take a step back and asses situations anew when a problem presents itself and is able to come at it with a new approach that solves the problem when other teachers have failed. I wish we had many clones of her to teach the higher grades as well!

Too hard to choose just one! I'll chime in with Michelle Grush and ditto the nomination for Erica Chung (1st/2nd grade at North Shoreview). When my older son was in kindergarten, I heard her class sing a song about skeletons for Halloween where they actually learned the real words of bones... tarsals, metatarsals, femur, etc and I decided that I really wanted him to be in that class the next year. Luckily he did get placed with her and had her for 2 years and then my younger son also had her for 2 years. She's fun and enthusiastic. She's great at letting the bright kids work ahead.
Laura Dudnick (Editor) October 5, 2012 at 09:56 pm
All of these teachers sound amazing! Please keep the votes coming and help spread the word on the contest so we can nominate as many great teachers as possible!
Anita Reimann October 5, 2012 at 10:01 pm
I have to mention at least one more teacher... Shawn Reifshneider teaches chorus at SMHS and Burlingame and the kids love his class. Last night was their first concert of the year and after less than 2 months of school, the kids put on a great show.
Michelle Grush October 5, 2012 at 10:34 pm
Ms. Erica went above and beyond to help my son who was struggling with reading. I can happily say he's reading at grade level now and enjoys picking up a book.
Michelle Grush October 5, 2012 at 10:36 pm
These 2 teachers share a position at our school. They do a wonderful job splitting their schedule and making sure every student has the support they need. My son is excited to go to class every day because of the fun and interesting approach they take to lessons.
Michelle Grush October 5, 2012 at 10:39 pm
Mrs. Crawford has worked at NSM for many years. She a soft spoken leader that the children enjoy learning from. Every day after school, my youngest son says "I want to keep learning! Do we have to leave?". I thank Mrs. Crawford for getting him excited about school.
Michelle Grush October 5, 2012 at 10:41 pm
Mrs. Mamis is an amazing roll model for these tweens & teens. She understands the emotional ups & downs this age goes through and gives them the direction & encouragement that they need. She's wonderful at teaching these children to become accountable for themselves & their actions.
Anita October 6, 2012 at 04:46 pm
Brewer Island is a complete school as all the teachers are "THE BEST",be it Academics,Parent-teacher interaction,Lifeskills or Discipline
I nominate Ms.Kristine Ayala,my son's 5th grade teacher as one among the best because of her positive attitude towards each and every kid.Her boisterous, bubbly nature paves a lively atmosphere in the classroom and even the most reclusive child starts blooming!!!
Diane Poirier October 6, 2012 at 06:55 pm
I vote for Mrs Thompson, 1st grade teacher at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City. She is the best teacher I have ever met!

"The first impression is the best impression"-True to the words,Ms.Ferrer, the then kindergarten teacher for my son, does give a very good impression of the school when we walk with our kids to her kindergarten classroom. She is warm, loving and kind, but at the same time she gives our kids the basic discipline they need to learn in an educational institution. She currently teaches 1st grade, but I bet every parent would love to have a teacher like her in their kids life.Ms.Ferrer s from Brewer Island Elementary.

I vote for Mrs Thompson, 1st grade teacher at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City. She is patient and very kind and brought the most improvements in my child
Sarah Hackman October 8, 2012 at 06:06 pm
My vote is for David Shilt at North Shoreview Montessori in the SMFCSD. Not only is he a wonderful teacher academically, but he has encouraged/enabled/facilitated/word (?) my daughter (4th grade) to come out of her shell and become a very active participant in all facets of classroom activities. How can you thank someone for something this significant?
Troy October 8, 2012 at 08:33 pm
I vote for Mrs Thompson, 1st grade teacher at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City. She is the best teacher I have ever met! She goes above and beyond to call for students and the school. She drives down from San Francisco arriving early and leaving late. I've even known her to use some of her own money on her students. She is known as "The Teacher's Teacher."
Cherry October 9, 2012 at 08:31 pm
All teachers at Brewer Island Elementary are awesome and amongst all I vote for Mrs. Thompson who is teaching 1st grade at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City. Mrs. Thompson is all loving, caring and very kind to all her students. She's the very best teacher and we all love her so much!!
Cathy Luo October 10, 2012 at 02:56 pm
Both my children have or are in Mrs. Nancy Crawford's class at North Shoreview Elementary (1/2 split). She is a caring teacher with a demeanor that is kind yet firm -- the kids really respond to that. She always has great projects to help the kids learn and she ably juggles a wide range of diverse learning requirements.
Cathy Luo October 10, 2012 at 02:58 pm
I also vote for David Shilt, 4/5 split at North Shoreview Montessori. All the kids in the class really respond to his humor and his hands-on approach to helping the children. My daughter comes home excited to tell me about what Mr. David said or taught them that day. He really encourages a love for learning.

Wow, no high school teachers yet? I vote for two who go waaaaay above and beyond just being great teachers, both at Aragon High School. Katie Ward is AP Biology teacher extraordinaire! She imparts such enthusiasm for the subject, makes it a blast for her students, and so so much is learned. Probably every student who's taken her class would say it's 1) the hardest most work in the whole school, 2) great fun, and 3) you learn more than any other class. She's just one of the most gifted and dedicated teachers I've ever met, and she loves teaching with a relish.
Second, Jennifer Wei, also at Aragon, and a great English teacher and mentor for her students. Ms. Wei is available on weekends if necessary to help students get a little extra input on essays. She's available after school for all sort of support. She's massively friendly and approachable, and clearly just loves teenagers. And she is reportedly hysterical in class, with antics like crazy jokes and expressing how much passion she has for a book by..biting it as if to eat it. She makes AP English fun, and is loved by every single person I know who knows her.

I vote for Mrs. Thompson, 1st grade teacher at Brewer Island Elementary School in Foster City. All the teachers there are great but there is something especially special about Mrs. Thompson. When my daughter started the second grade she always wanted to stop by her room on the way home from school to say hi and give her a hug!
David Grimes October 11, 2012 at 01:58 pm
I vote for Mrs. Mamis. Just thinking about her teaching her everyday classes, mentoring students, working to develop and help build the new grade 6-8 program at North Shoreview and commuting to Moraga while working on her masters and continuing to be a great mom; amazing teacher and person!
Lisa Prisco Taner October 11, 2012 at 04:21 pm
Our vote is for Mr. Kevin Agius at Laurel Elementary School. He possesses an amazing ability to earn both the respect and love of his kids. He teaches 4th grade. My son, now in 7th grade, still wants to go back to his old classroom to volunteer with "Mr. A!"
Jacqueline October 11, 2012 at 06:22 pm
I vote for Ms. Lani Lavine from Audubon Elementary in Foster City. She is truly an amazing teacher!!!

Just tell them you want to sign up for Summer semester, Real Estate Practice 110 class, Course Reference number 54642 and that you'd like to complete the enrollment today. Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.
Claire Mack June 2, 2013 at 09:21 am
To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
