Former San Francisco Giants pitcher Keith Comstock is among the group to be inducted into the Cañada College Athletic Hall of Fame during its June 1 Hall of Fame Ceremony.
Comstock, who also played at San Carlos High, enjoyed a six-year pitching career in the major leasgues with the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres and the Giants.
In 1976, Keith struck out 22 batters in a game against Marin College while pitching for the Colts. He was a fifth round draft pick of the California Angels in June of 1976. He ‘s currently the pitching rehab coordinator for the Texas Rangers.
Jerry Drever served as Canada’s men’s basketball between 1969-1976. He also started the men’s golf program and won a state championship in 1988.
Canada Athletic Director Mike Garcia played basketball and baseball at Cañada and also coached baseball there between 1984-2002. He was an all-conference basketball player in 1976. and all-state in 1976 and All-American in 1977 in baseball.
As a baseball coach he compiled a record of 451-220 with six conference championships, 14 straight state playoff appearances (1988-2001) and a Final Four berth in 1998.
He was a member of the 1979 NCAA Champion Cal State Fullerton baseball team and played five years in the Atlanta Braves organization.
The late Gordon Gray served as Division Dean, Athletic Director, Head Women’s Softball Coach, and Assistant Coach Baseball. He helped shape the Athletic Department from 1968 to 1985 andf was a co-founder of the Fitness For Life Institute.
Woodside High grad John Hursh, who won the 1971 CCS Doubles with 11-year NBA player Rich Kelley, helped put Cañada tennis on the map. He won two conference singles titles and helped the team reach its first State Championship while winning the State Singles Title. Hursh went on to playat San Jose State, where he won the 1975 Pacific Coast Association No. 4 Singles Title.
Former Canada Athletic Director and baseketball coach Mike Legarza (1989-2000) compiled a record of 259-59 while winning multiple conference championships and making one Final Four appearance.
As a player, Legarza was an All-State performer for the legendary Bud Presley at Menlo College before moving on to the University of Nevada in Reno. He led the state in free throw percentage (91 percent), and was second in the state in field goal percentage (66 percent).
He’s recognized as one of the top youth sports experts in the country. He is the Founder, President, and CEO of Legarza Basketball and Volleyball camps.
Former major leaguer Harold Reynolds will receive the, “Harold Reynolds – Colts Lifetime Achievement Award”. The first round draft pick out of Cañada by the Seattle Mariners in 1980, he spent 12 years in the majors. He’s a two-time All-Star, a three-time Gold Glove winner and led the American League in stolen bases in 1987.
Golf champion Javier Sanchez was the state medalist in 1988, shooting a 71 to help lead the Canada golf team to the state championship. He competed on the PGA Tour qualifying school and is currently a member of the Champions Tour.
