Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy Receives $500 Book Donation

Target stores and First Book regularly make donations to schools nationwide to help foster a love of reading in students and young children.

The announced Friday that , a "magnet" middle school in San Mateo, has received a $500 book donation from Target and First Book. 

Assistant Principal Lorin Wilson; students Alberto Hernandez, Mary Taufoou-Tongamoa, Ariel Sullivan and Andrew Abbott; and teachers Tamara Hunt and Jessica Becker were on hand to receive the donation on Aug. 23.

In partnership with First Book, Target has distributed more than 1.5 million new books to children nationwide.  Target representatives say they believe reading is essential to a child’s learning process.  Therefore, Target regularly awards grants to schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations to support programs such as after-school reading events and weekend book clubs in an effort to foster a love of reading and encourage children to read with their families.

Wilson said Bayside S.T.E.M. Academy aims to prepare students for "the high-speed, wired, innovative and global economy of the 21st century."  In partnership with Stanford University, the concept of “Design Thinking” is embedded within the curriculum of specialized electives and core content.  Students are immersed in a technology-rich environment and provided opportunities to enroll in academically challenging and accelerated courses in keeping with the magnet school's theme of S.T.E.M. - science, technology, engineering and math.
