David Manoa wanted to share his special moment with both family and friends. So he waited to sign his national letter of intent to play football at the University of Hawaii until after he helped Aragon beat San Mateo, 79-41, in a PAL South Division boys' basketball game Wednesday night.
Manoa, a first team all-Bay Division pick as a defensive lineman, inked his name to the official papers in a special ceremony set up by Aragon football coach and athletic director Steve Sell.
"I was impressed with the coaching staff," Manoa said. "I had a great trip to the islands and it was something I felt very comfortable with. I can see myself there for four or five years."
Because he waited to sign, he was not among those announced by the Rainbow Wahine earlier in the day. He'll also have company from the area, as Woodside defensive lineman Matthew Koloamatangi also signed with Hawaii.
Leo Koloamatangi, who graduated from Sacred Heart Prep, signed with Hawaii last year.
Aragon took care of business against the Bearcats, going on a 14-0 run to turn a deficit into a big lead.
San Mateo held an 18-17 edge late in the first quarter before the Dons (8-2 in league play, 17-5 overall) went to work.
Alex Manu scored 14 points to lead Aragon, which won its seventh straight. Nick Frankel added 12 and Nuku Etu 10.
Sameh Bdeir scored 14 points to lead the Bearcats. Jonathan Arevallos added 13 points.
In other games Wednesday, Connor Haupt scored 20 points to help Burlingame (10-0, 15-7) remain two games ahead of the Dons in the league standings. The Panthers beat Mills, 53-42.
The Vikings (6-4, 13-9) held a one-point lead entering the final quarter. Joseph Worku scored 21 points for Mills.
Menlo-Atherton (6-4, 10-12) edged Carlmont, 37-36, as Deverick Meacham scored 10 points. Michael Costello scored 18 points for the Scots (5-5, 16-6).
Julian Bertero scored 14 points to help Sequoia (5-5) down Woodside, 49-43. David Lopez scored 21 points for the Wildcats (4-6, 10-12).
Brian Houle scored 19 points as Hillsdale (5-5, 13-9) beat Capuchino (0-10), 66-30.
