Volunteers Needed to Count Homeless in San Mateo County

Volunteers will not interact with the homeless but will participate in a valuable survey.

By Bay City News Service

San Mateo County officials are looking for volunteers to participate in a biennial census of homeless people living in the county.

The 2013 Homeless One-Day Count is scheduled to take place on Jan. 24 between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., according to the San Mateo County Human Services Agency.

Hundreds of volunteers will fan out across the county and drive or walk through every census tract, taking note of the number of homeless individuals, families and encampments that are seen.

The results of the count provide valuable data for policymakers and organizations that provide services and develop programs for homeless residents of San Mateo County, according to the Human Services Agency.

Volunteer counters are needed to make the event a success, organizers said.

The volunteers, who do not interact with the homeless people they encounter, must be at least 18 years old and can be individuals or groups.

There are a number of volunteer training sessions scheduled over the next two weeks, including two today in San Mateo and South San Francisco.

Anyone wishing to participate can sign up online here. In 2011, 2,149 homeless residents were tallied, according to census results.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
