Students Produce Valentines for Veterans

"Dear Veteran, Thank you for helping to serve our country. Thank you for making our world a better place. Happy Valentine day. Sincerely, Tsubag."

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, on Tuesday applauded San Mateo County students who helped produce more than 2,000 Valentine's Day cards for veterans.

The cards came from about 25 schools in the county, with writers ranging in age from 2 to 20 years old, according to Speier's office.

“This is a teachable moment for our children,” Speier said in a statement.

“Creating these cards gives them a deeper understanding and appreciation of the service and sacrifices our veterans are willing to give to protect our country,” she said. “I am sure our veterans will be as touched as I am by this outpouring of love and support.”

One elementary student wrote: “Dear Veteran, Thank you for taking care of our America. Your hard working. We love you. Love, Tehya.”

A student from Canada College wrote: “Thank you for everything that you have done not only for our country but for me and Billions of other people’s lives you help save daily. I hope you get better & COME HOME SOON! God Bless, Natalie.”

Another Canada student extended an invitation: “Thank you for all you do for me & my family. I owe you… Look me up when you’re done I’ll make you Dinner. Sammy.”

Speier’s staff will deliver the cards to Ft. Miley VA Hospital today.

Speier said she was inspired by the tradition that syndicated newspaper columnist Ann Landers started 22 years ago when she encouraged her readers to send Valentine's Day cards to veterans in VA facilities across the country. Millions of cards, letters and packages have been delivered to veterans ever since.
