Speier Pledges Support of Veterans Alleging Rape, Sexual Assault

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, plans to show her support by visiting Lackland Air Force Base.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, on Friday announced her support of 19 veterans who, in a new federal lawsuit, allege they were raped or sexually assaulted while they served in the U.S. Army or U.S. Air Force.

“The service members who have bravely joined this lawsuit are demanding nothing more than the justice they could not gain through the military’s grossly deficient judicial system that is inherently biased against victims,” Speier said.

“After being raped or sexually assaulted by uniformed colleagues, these survivors reported the crimes committed against them,” she said.

“But instead of their perpetrators being punished, the victims were intimidated, isolated, and retaliated against.

“As the plaintiffs rightly pursue litigation in our civilian court system, I am working in Congress to overhaul the military justice system through legislation like the STOP Act and through rigorous oversight measures,” Speier said.

Speier plans to visit Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX, to ask why 18 military training instructors were allegedly able to rape, assault, or mistreat 42 recruits.

“While at the base, I intend to meet with key Air Force personnel, military trainers, and trainees to understand how these abuses could be permitted for so long and by so many. Most importantly, I will seek solutions,” Speier said.

Speier will join Congressman Joe Wilson, Chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel, and two other Members of Congress for a day-long CODEL to Lackland Air Force Base on Tuesday, Oct. 2.

PS: Ideally, everybody will be able to sign up at the college website. But I have to acknowledgeRead More that some of the language may not be perfectly as clear as we'd like, especially if this is your first enrollment. Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
