Restaurant Closed Due to Presence of Rodents

Little Sichuan in downtown San Mateo was forcibly closed Thursday for health code violations.

According to the San Mateo County Health System, the restaurant at 168 E. 4th Ave. in San Mateo was forcibly closed Thursday for major health code violations.

The website indicates the "presence of vermin, rodents, insects, birds or animals" was the reason for Little Sichuan's sudden closure.

As of press time, there are no notices of any scheduled administrative hearings regarding this matter, and no word on if or when the restaurant will re-open.

The only surprise here is that it took this long. We ate at Little Sichuan about 2 years ago and heard rats / rodents moving around and chewing in the walls throughout our dinner. It was pretty gross. The fact that no one from the Health Department detected anything awry at that place until know is probably of more concern than anything else.

10 years ago, I ate there all the time. The food was great and they were always crowded. 6 or 7 years ago, the food quality sharply dropped downhill. I wasn't the only one to notice that, since the place was never crowded any more. I haven't been there in more than 5 years and after reading the story, am glad for that.

The Health Department should move a little faster around the Peninsula. I estimate a 50% OF RESTAURANT and OTHER small store are infested with all kind of..............and some of the employee they don't know what is the meaning of personal hygiene. So the Health Department just waste is time with one time per year visit to Restaurant, etc, etc,

Every day since Thursday they've been telling us they're renovating and they'll be open the following day. Today they said maybe next week. That was before I knew why they were renovating :)

K - yes, another reader e-mailed me and said they had a sign on their door saying "closed for kitchen remodeling." Not exactly true! The health dept. has been visiting the restaurant daily but every time they do, they find more rodents and keep them closed for another day.
