San Mateo Pays Tribute on National Peace Officers Memorial Day

San Mateo is also honoring Sgt. Gordon Joinville, who was killed in 1968 and is the only San Mateo police officer to die in the line of duty.

The city of San Mateo will fly its flags at half mast on Tuesday in remembrance of peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

In honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day on Tuesday, the remainder of the week has also been proclaimed National "Police Week," city officials announced Monday.

In recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, President Obama encouraged all flags to be flown at half mast.

"We owe a profound debt to all those who have worn the badge, and to the families whose care enables them to serve with courage and pride," Obama said.

"When the unthinkable happens and officers give their lives or are seriously injured in the line of duty, we have an obligation to give their loved ones the support they deserve. During Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, we recall the selflessness of our law enforcement officers and their families, and we honor all those who devote their lives to forging a stronger, safer America. Let us reflect on their invaluable contributions as we enjoy the peace they bring to our communities, and let us vow that their service will never be taken for granted."

The city is asking San Mateo residents to join the men and women of the San Mateo Police Department in honoring those police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe.

San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer is also asking the community to remember the family and brave actions of the city's own Sgt. Gordon Joinville, the only San Mateo officer to die in the line of duty.

Joinville was killed while pursuing a violent suspect on May 23, 1968. His sacrifices are commemorated by the city of San Mateo with a plaque and photo at Joinville Pool.
