San Mateo Accepting Donations for Adopted Troops

Residents are invited to drop off donations for the 101st Airborne unit through June 14.

The city of San Mateo is accepting donations for its adopted troops, the 101st Airborne unit who are serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan until August.

The soldiers are very grateful for the outpouring of support from San Mateo.

On Saturday, May 25, Smart and Final (1840 S. Norfolk Street, San Mateo) will offer shoppers the opportunity to place donated items in barrels in front of the store.

Donations can also be dropped off on weekdays until June 14 at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall, 330 West 20th Ave.

Donation ideas include:

  • Anti-bacterial wipes
  • Baby wipes
  • Chapstick & lotions
  • Snack cakes–individual size
  • Dental floss
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Nuts –individual size
  • Q-tips
  • Mouthwash
  • Feminine hygiene items
  • Trail mix –individual size
  • Sunscreen
  • Deodorant
  • Fruit Leather
  • Cookies –individual size
  • Protein Bars
  • Dried fruit
  • Contact lens cleaner
  • Jerky –individual size
San Mateo's relationship with the troops began on March 4, 1968, when the original unit was adopted by the San Mateo City Council.
