Rep. Speier: Connecticut Shooting an 'Unspeakable Tragedy'

A gunman rampaged through Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Friday morning killing up to 30 people.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo, said Friday afternoon she is at a loss for words in response to the tragic massacre in Connecticut that has shocked the entire nation.

"Watching in horror and disbelief at what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning, I can’t find words to describe the shock and sadness I am feeling for the children and adults who were senselessly murdered," Speier said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the parents, families and school employees in Newtown, Connecticut who are confronting an unspeakable tragedy," she said.

The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning horrified the nation and left parents questioning how they can protect their children.

Twenty-seven people were killed—the majority of them children between the ages of 5 and 10—at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. The violence is the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

"The senseless taking of 26 lives raises so many questions about why this happened and what can be done to make certain it is not repeated elsewhere. But these questions have been asked before and each time the response has been one of grief followed by inaction," Speier said.

"Perhaps, this latest tragedy will lead to the kind of policies that will effectively prevent troubled people in this country from obtaining guns capable of massacring innocent people," she said.

Its amazing how we have the most powerful military in the world and yet we cant even protect our children in the schools...
Ben There December 15, 2012 at 01:18 am
If we just ban guns already we would be in good shape. 2A lobby is too strong. No worries here...Yee and Speier are on it. Bad guys always follow the law so creating new ones will make us all safer. If there is an issue 911 responders are only 5-10 min away. That's plenty of time to hold off an attack.
Jo Tog December 15, 2012 at 02:20 am
Take down all GUN-FREE ZONE signs. Put up 2nd Amendment supported on our facility, only then may our schools have peace.
Robert E December 15, 2012 at 02:45 am
We can't protect them from their parish preist in church also.
Joellen Bell December 15, 2012 at 12:52 pm
No matter what gun control laws are made it will only work if criminals followed them too. And that isn't going to happen.
Look at that last paragraph the rep. Speier says in his statement: he wants policies to prevent trouble people from getting guns . Where is his head at?!? These people don't buy these guns legally like good citizens. There criminals and buy them from other criminals. Get real rep speier. You are suppose to be representing us and you can't see that gun policies won't stop killings like this. And who is going to evaluate each person that buys a gun. We need to do something to protect are children & families from these senseless murders.

Chris: what happened yesterday could have been mitigated if the “Wild West” was active. The “Wild West” evens the playing field as it balances good & evil. In today’s world only the “bad guys” carry because there are laws against folks walking around with guns. By definition the “good guys” are unarmed as they follow the law. “Bad guys” by definition are law breakers so naturally they could care less about any law our legislature can dream up. In today’s world bad guys have a significant tactical advantage. Not only do they get to choose their engagement point, they know they are the only one with a weapon in that engagement (because all the good guys are following the rules and are unarmed). 911 responders are at best 5 minutes out. That is plenty of time to do lots of damage. Gun ownership is not something you or anyone should take lightly. Know the law, get trained, and be safe.

I am not an advocate of gun control and armed citizens is a good start. Sounds like another case of Prozac or an overbearing mother. Why not stop medicating our young people.
Jackie Spier was shot five times by Jim Jones's guards and whats changed? Well she is busy working on legislation that protects LGBT people from medical practices that try and change them back to heterosexual. http://speier.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=848:congresswoman-jackie-speier-calls-for-end-to-lgbt-conversion-quackery-introduces-stop-harming-our-kids-shok-resolution&catid=1:press-releases&Itemid=14 All while our children are being shot in our schools.

Hey alvy, I bet I can go to Jackies page and find a ton of stuff she is working on? Yes you pick one thing about LGBT? You really just sound like a Homophobic armchair loudmouth with your prozac mother bs. Maybe you are describing yourself?
Ben There December 15, 2012 at 07:24 pm
really?
wolfone December 15, 2012 at 07:26 pm
Chris, that is also why you don't NEED a gun. Most of these freaks on here would be scared $h*tless to do what you do for work. And without a gun no less?
You are REAL...most of these blowhards HERE are fearful big mouths that think they need a gun to survive. And I guess they do b/c if they met your people, (Your peeps ) would smell the fear oozing off their azzes. You realize there is not "THEM" vs us, it is all we, on this earth, human family all interconnected. Moviestar, lawyer, dr. postman or thief, we are all cut from the same cloth, some have the breaks and some do not. But we are all the same, clothes, titles & monied or not is meaningless.
wolfone December 15, 2012 at 07:27 pm
And you jotag consider yourself..."sane"...
wolfone December 15, 2012 at 07:30 pm
Ben there...nope the wild west days don't work. And you also call yourself "sane".
Gabby Giffords had a GLOCK....DO YOU HEAR ME? She had a Glock and was shot point blank...with another glock. That is your wild west days, yesterday wild west. You people are out of your flippin' minds.

Speier served as a congressional staffer for Congressman Leo Ryan. Speier was part of the November 1978 fact-finding mission to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by the Reverend Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple followers, almost all of whom were American citizens who had moved to Jonestown, Guyana, with Jones in 1977 and 1978.[5] Speier was one of only two members of the mission who were concerned enough about potential violence to make out a will before traveling to Jonestown.[10] Several Peoples Temple members ambushed the investigative team and others boarding the plane to leave Jonestown on November 18. Five people died, including Congressman Ryan. While attempting to shield herself from rifle and shotgun fire behind small airplane wheels with the other members of the team, Speier was shot five times and waited 22 hours before help arrived.[11] The murder of Congressman Ryan was the only assassination of a Congressman in the line of duty in the history of the United States.[12] That same day, over 900 of the remaining members of the Peoples Temple died in Jonestown and Georgetown. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackie_Speier

Wolfone -- you missed the point, which is that our representatives are spending time on nonsense, rather than the basics which is education etc. How many times to we hear them complaining about doing more for education and nothing ever happens. Why are there all these shootings? I would argue that its because our representatives have sold us out to special interests like drug companies, and the media, just so they can get elected. This statement by Speier is too little too late as they say.
Ben There December 15, 2012 at 08:07 pm
Since I am reading this no Wolf I don't hear you but I understand what you are saying. You are trying to say that guns are bad and if there were no such thing we would all live in peace and harmony. I disagree with this. While Ms. Giffords may have been carrying (I’ll assume this to be true as most politicians want guns for themselves but not the masses) the Wild West scenario would not have helped her individually however certainly would mitigate additional carnage as pistol packing bystanders would have ended the jackass’ run immediately. As I mentioned before the bad guy gets to choose the stage which is a significant tactical advantage. Nothing Giffords could have done but others could have stepped in as soon as evil reared it’s ugly head. As the wise Martin Luther once said: "Do not suppose that abuses are eliminated by destroying the object which is abused. Men can go wrong with wine and women. Shall we prohibit and abolish women?"
BTW: I never said I was sane however I think I have a leg up on you. ;)

Did you know that Harvey Milk said cult leader Jim Jones was “a man of the highest
character” (Source: Harvey Milk letter to President Jimmy Carter, Feb. 19, 1978) Harvey Milk Lobbied Jimmy Carter to let Jim Jones have custody of a six-year-old boy, who Jones later poisoned Milk wrote, “Not only is the life of a child at stake, who presently have loving protective parents in Rev. and Mrs. Jones….” (Source: Harvey Milk letter to President Jimmy Carter, Feb. 19, 1978)

Why is this happening? Because the women are not being honest with themselves. They are in Denial. His mother divorced, and she drove the kid crazy. Simple as that....most people barely survive one mother, let alone two. Imagine with same sex marriages whats gonna happen?
Alvy Singer December 16, 2012 at 12:06 am
True, generally speaking, Boys need their fathers. In fact with women working now, and feeling more stressed they shoot their mouths off not realizing the damage to the kids. Plus they have the protection from the police in case the husband try's to straighten them out. All the while shes the one on PMS. Irrational. We are living in an irrational world driven by irrational minds on PMS.

If two parents are necessarily better than one single parent, then three parents must be better than two.
Alvy Singer December 16, 2012 at 12:15 am
What we are witnessing is the effects of feminism on our boys. They cant take it any more and the weaker ones explode like this. Its the women's fault. I don't blame the kid. I blame the women and the police. Because if the police show up at her house and tell her to stop causing trouble, maybe she would clean up her act and the kid would have had a chance. Instead, they remove the husband, the divorce happens, and the young man is destroyed along with innocent children. I say they got it right when boys and girls were separated in the schools and men taught boys. Not women. I'm also for school programs that allow boys to vent aggression from their rising testosterone levels. Boxing, blowing stuff up in science class etc.
Alvy Singer December 16, 2012 at 12:35 am
Wolfone....if the kid was a genius it has no impact on the situation. His mother drove him crazy. Just like Harvey Milk drove his co worker crazy and five of his boyfriends, all of which committed suicide. Harvey Milk was surrounded by death and destruction. What I am indicating is the root cause analysis. Forget about homophobes for a second. I like to refer to it has Homosexual Paranoia. Why do your call yourself Wolf?
Alvy Singer December 16, 2012 at 03:17 pm
Didn't you ever hear the phrase "It takes two to tango"?
or the line.... "I'm writing a book about my mother....Its called the castrating Zionist" f you take psychology in college, you will learn all about how mothers all across this world are the cause of mental illness in children. There are plenty of examples of Serial Killers who all had crazy, neglectful or abusive mothers. As a society what has been done about that concept? Nothing. What we should do is pass legislation that charges the mothers with murder if something like this occurs, and provide treatment for the child who was abused. That for sure will put an end to it.

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.
Claire Mack June 2, 2013 at 09:21 am
To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
