Obama Visit on Wednesday to Shake Up Traffic and Parking

Secret Service is mandating strict regulations and protocols for the May 23 event.

Whether local residents are excited for in Redwood City’s or dreading his appearance, they will all be impacted in some way.

The Secret Service requires significant restrictions and security protocols for transporting the President in and out of the city, so downtown Redwood City and the area surrounding the Fox Theatre will have major restrictions on May 23. If you're planning on heading down from Millbrae, you might be forewarned.

The Redwood City Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies will be executing the security logistics.

“We really don’t have a choice,” Chief JR Gamez laughed, referencing to the specific directions that Secret Service mandates.

Starting early Wednesday afternoon around 2 or 3 p.m., the following will take place, according to the city:

  • A security perimeter will be set up and barricaded, around the Downtown core area (the specific area is presently being determined)
  • The area must be cleared so that the Secret Service can carry out its security sweeps of the entire Downtown core area prior to the President’s arrival in the evening.
  • There will be no vehicles, pedestrians, employees, or any other unauthorized persons allowed inside that perimeter after that time
  • We are anticipating that businesses within the security perimeter must be closed and vacated for the duration of the event (potentially until 10 pm).
  • Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the Downtown area during the afternoon and evening - there is the potential for protests or demonstrations to take place in the vicinity, so anyone who is in the area should exercise caution.

However, this information is subject to change, according to the city, and updates will be made as soon as more information is provided.

Changeable electronic message boards at several locations Downtown will advise motorists and pedestrians of the upcoming traffic restrictions. “No Parking” signs will give motorists notice of where to avoid parking on the day of the event.

Just a short thought to get the word out quickly about anything in your neighborhood.
Share something with your neighbors. Write a new post... What's up? Make an announcement, speak your mind, or sell something

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
