Former San Mateo City Manager Arne Croce is most recently known for serving as the interim chief manager of the scandal-plagued city of Bell, Calif.
But 2013 is bringing a different title to Croce, who served as city manager of San Mateo for 18 years -- the long-time Peninsula resident has been named the Executive Director of the Peninsula Family Service, one of the Peninsula’s longest standing and most highly respected community service organizations.
“It gives us a tremendous sense of confidence to know that Arne, his work, his management style and his ability to empower and transform an organization are proven and well known by so many leaders in our community. This is a very happy time for Peninsula Family Service,” said Judy Swanson, chairman of the board of directors of Peninsula Family Service.
As executive director of Peninsula Family Service, Croce will set and guide the strategic direction for the organization, as well as manage day-to-day operations and oversee a staff of nearly 200 dedicated to transforming lives through community service programs for children, families and older adults who need a hand.
Peninsula Family Service currently offers programs in the areas of child development and education; parent education and coaching; wellness and life-long learning for older adults; and financial empowerment.
“I am thrilled at the opportunity to work with the Peninsula Family Service board, staff, funders and partners to further the organization’s mission to empower children, families, and older adults to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency, building a strong and caring community. The executive director position is a good match for my experience and skills, and my interests and values,” said Croce.
As the city manager of San Mateo, a position he held from 1990 to 2008, Croce was responsible for the development and oversight of a $110 million annual operating budget.
Under his leadership, San Mateo developed a new library, a police station, two fire stations, several parks, and successfully navigated some tough financial challenges.
After leaving San Mateo’s top position in 2008, and with two children already graduated from college, he and his wife embarked on a year of travel and volunteer service.
Most recently, Croce served as interim city manager in the scandal-plagued city of Bell, Calif. Croce’s volunteer service has included work as an adult literacy tutor for San Mateo City Public Library’s Project Read; past president of the Rotary Club of San Mateo; board member of the San Mateo/Foster City Elementary School District Foundation; and coach for youth soccer.
