DMV Services Temporarily Suspended

Department of Motor Vehicles statewide are asking people to reschedule their driving tests in the San Mateo/Foster City area and elsewhere if possible, due to a downed computer system.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is one of several state departments whose computer systems are down this morning, a DMV spokesman said. Computers went down at DMV field offices statewide, including Redwood City, around 8 a.m. after a problem occurred at the state Office of Technology Services, DMV spokesman Armando Botello said.

Other state offices affected in some capacity by the technical problems include the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, the DMV's umbrella organization; the Department of Consumer Affairs; and the Department of Personnel Administration.

"We're the worst because we have so many offices and services that people depend on," Botello said of the DMV. Visitors to the DMV can still take driving tests, and some paperwork can be done by hand and put into the computer system later, Botello said.

At some DMV offices, self-service terminals where drivers can renew their registration are still operating. At the DMV headquarters in Sacramento, Botello said, said there was no Internet connection, and the problem was also affecting state-issued BlackBerry smartphones. There is no estimated time when computer service will be fixed.

"It might come back in 10 minutes or an hour," Botello said. Meanwhile, affected motorists who can reschedule their appointments are being asked to do so. Others who need immediate services are waiting out the technical difficulties, Botello said. Online services available at dmv.ca.gov are functioning properly.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
