Daly City Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. William B. GrossPaniagua, 28, died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

A soldier from Daly City was killed in an attack in the Kunar province of Afghanistan on Sunday, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Sgt. William B. GrossPaniagua, 28, died of injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device, department officials said.

GrossPaniagua was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Gov. Jerry Brown and first lady Anne Gust Brown released a statement Tuesday morning extending condolences to GrossPaniagua's family and announcing flags will be flown at half-staff over the state Capitol Tuesday.
