County Deems Bird Found in Foster City West Nile Virus Chronic

The Northern Shoveler bird was reported in Foster City on Oct. 2.

A Northern Shoveler bird found earlier this month in Foster City has been deemed West Nile Virus chronic, the San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control District announced this week.

The bird, found on Oct. 2, is the fourth bird found this year in Foster City to have been confirmed West Nile Virus positive or chronic.

In addition, a House Sparrow reported in Burlingame on Oct. 9 has also been deemed West Nile Virus chronic.

An animal that tests positive for West Nile Virus indicates a current infection (active viremia) that was acquired this season. One that is deemed West Nile Virus chronic indicates a low level of infection that was not acquired this season.

The County Mosquito & Vector Control District will set traps for mosquitoes in the area. All mosquitoes tested this year have been negative for West Nile Virus.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
