San Mateo Woman Struck on Foster City Boulevard Dies

Police said the collision, which occurred Thursday, was the first fatal crash the city has seen in 20 years.

A San Mateo woman who was struck by a car in Foster City on Thursday has died, police said Monday.

The pedestrian, identified as Esther Gonzalez, 57, was hit at about 7:40 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Foster City Boulevard and Bounty Drive, according to Foster City police.

An initial investigation releaved Gonzalez was crossing Bounty Drive when she was struck by a 2003 Toyota Corolla that was traveling north on Foster City Boulevard, police said.

It appears Gonzalez was in the crosswalk at the time of the collision, but apparently she was attempting to cross against the traffic control device, which was green for the vehicle being driven northbound on Foster City Boulevard, according to police.

At this time, there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision. The accident remains under investigation and upon completion will be forwarded to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The involved driver, a 52-year-old female from Foster City, was not cited for any violations at the scene.

It has been 20 years since Foster City has experienced a fatal traffic collision within its city limits, Foster City Police Chief Matt Martell said.

"This collision is a stark reminder that roadway conditions can change rapidly and both drivers and pedestrians should remain aware at all times for potential hazards," Martell said in a statement.

"Traffic control devices should be adhered to by anyone using a roadway, regardless of whether they are a driver, pedestrian, or bicyclist," he said.
