The San Mateo Police Department on Saturday will participate in a nationwide effort to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from residents' medicine cabinets.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., San Mateo residents will be able to drop off their unused prescription drugs at the Police Department -- no questions asked.
This National Take-Back Day, put on in collaboration with the DEA, aims to bring national focus to the issue of increasing abuse of pharmaceutical controlled substances.
The one-day effort provides an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction; drugs that, according to police, are a potential source of supply for illegal use.
The program is anonymous. Residents may bring prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications; i.e. tablets and capsules. Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted.
Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.
Residents may dispose of pharmaceuticals anytime at the Police Department.
