The San Mateo Police Department on Friday will join a worldwide initiative to promote law enforcement social media by participating in a Global Police Tweet-a-Thon.
This is the second such event – the original event in March 2013 included more than 200 law enforcement agencies representing more than 10 countries worldwide, all unified on Twitter with the hashtag #PolTwt.
More than 48,000 tweets were sent globally, in more than 25 different languages.
San Mateo Police will be working in coordination with several bay area law enforcement agencies in our working group known as BALESMG (Bay Area Law Enforcement Social Media Group).
Law Enforcement agencies worldwide will be conducting variations of tweets from the beat, virtual ride alongs, officer profiles, and information campaigns designed to stimulate both awareness of law enforcement social media as an authority information source, and increased community engagement and education to encourage neighborhoods to coordinate with the police to stop and solve crime.
@SanMateoPD will begin its virtual ride-along on Nov. 1 at its 4 p.m. lineup and will be live-tweeting through the night until about midnight.
The Police Department encourages residents to follow them via Twitter and to follow the hashtag #PolTwt to see police messaging with communities all over the world.
Expect to see details of some of SMPD’s calls for the night, information on and from officers who patrol your neighborhoods, and important safety information.
