San Mateo Police Arrest Stabbing Suspect

The stabbing occurred Thursday afternoon near the San Mateo Caltrain station.

San Mateo police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing another male near the Caltrain station in downtown San Mateo on Thursday afternoon.

The stabbing was reported at 4:10 p.m. on a pedestrian footbridge connecting the north end of the Downtown Transit Center Caltrain station and an alley behind North B Street.

The victim was found there suffering from a stab wound and was transported to a trauma center for treatment. Police said Monday he was expected to survive.

Following leads, detectives identified the suspect as Dantes Mkrtchjan, a 21-year-old transient, and disseminated investigative information about Mkrtchjan to surrounding law enforcement agencies.

A San Mateo Patrol Sergeant spotted Mkrtchjan on Friday, and the suspect was taken into custody within 24 hours of the incident.

Mkrtchjan was arrested in the area of Hillsdale Boulevard and El Camino Real, and booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
