A weekend crash in Belmont that sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries is being investigated as a possible DUI, police said Monday.

Belmont Police Captain Patrick Halleran says the crash was reported around 9:35 p.m. Friday, in the 500 block of Ralston Avenue.

The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge Charger slammed into a tree and parked car, according to the captain.

"The Charger left the roadway and collided with a redwood tree in the center median," he said.  "After striking the tree, the driver attempted to continue driving eastbound and collided with a Saab sedan that was parked at the side of the road."

After hitting both the tree and vehicle, the man tried to get away from the scene by running away.  However, witnesses caught him, and held him for police, according to Halleran.

"While the cause of the collision is still under investigation, it appears that alcohol may have been a factor," Halleran said.

The man, whose identity wasn't released, was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to an area hospital with injuries described as "serious, non life-threatening."
