A San Carlos man accused of beating a man to death outside a Belmont bar last year has been sentenced in San Mateo County Superior Court to 14 years in state prison, prosecutors said Tuesday.

According to the district attorney's office, Joseph Kaufman, 24, was sentenced Friday to 14 years, minus 448 days credit for time served, for fatally beating Barney Hanepen following an argument outside The Lariat Tavern on April 29, 2013.

In addition, Kaufman was ordered to pay about $5,000 in restitution to the victim's family members.

Kaufman pleaded no contest to charges of voluntary manslaughter and felony assault on April 24.

Prosecutors said Kaufman and Hanepen had been separately drinking at the bar, located at 1428 El Camino Real in Belmont, and after closing hours began arguing outside of the business over Hanepen's female friend. The dispute turned violent and Kaufman punched the victim in the face, knocked him to the ground and repeatedly kicked him in the head, according to prosecutors.

Hanepen, 48, was taken to Stanford Hospital, where he died from his injuries three days later.

Belmont police arrested Kaufman within hours of the incident. He had remained in county jail in Redwood City on no bail status until Friday's sentencing.
