Police: Man Strikes Friend with Sledgehammer, Steals Car

The San Mateo Police Department says the suspect allegedly assaulted an acquaintance when they pulled over at a gas station.

The San Mateo Police Department arrested a 26-year-old man this weekend  after he allegedly struck an acquaintance with a sledgehammer and stole the victim's car, officials said Tuesday.

Aaron Hanna, a Pleasanton resident, was riding in the victim's car when just before 3 p.m. Sunday the vehicle overheated and the victim pulled over at a Chevron gas station in the 800 block of North Delaware Street, police said.

While the victim, a 30-year-old San Bruno resident, was tending to his vehicle, Hanna struck the victim with a sledgehammer, causing non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Hanna then took the victim's vehicle, a black Honda Accord, and drove away, police said.

Officers responded to the gas station and put out an area-wide broadcast for Hanna and the vehicle. At about 5:30 p.m., Hanna and the vehicle were located in the area of San Bruno Avenue and Skyline Boulevard in San Bruno, police said.

Hanna was arrested without incident, and the vehicle was recovered. Hanna was later booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon and auto theft.
