Police are continuing to look for witnesses to a shooting that happened along a mile of U.S. Highway 101 in San Mateo County on Sunday afternoon.
Belmont police Lt. Patrick Halleran said Monday that the three people in a Dodge Charger that were shot multiple times appeared to be the intended targets.
"Information gathered so far indicates that this was not a random shooting," Halleran said.
Investigators were trying to determine if the shooting was prompted by a road rage incident or if it stemmed from another dispute, Halleran said.
At about 3:30 p.m., the Charger was shot numerous times as it headed south on Highway 101 near the Ralston Avenue off-ramp in Belmont, police said.
The vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed through a construction fence about a mile further south near an off-ramp to Holly Street in San Carlos.
Three people in the car were hospitalized with injuries from the shooting or the crash, police said.
A 19-year-old man from East Palo Alto and a 23-year-old woman from Santa Cruz were treated and released. A 24-year-old man from Menlo Park remains hospitalized.
No other vehicles were struck by bullets, and no one else was injured, police said.
